Frequently Asked Questions

Answers from Our Chicopee Electrician

  • Q:How are electronic timers beneficial?

A:Timers are a great way to switch your lights on and off when you’re not around. For better security, there are timers that allow random settings, making it harder for burglars to tell when you’re away.

  • Q:What kind of light bulbs should I purchase?

A:Fluorescent bulbs are more expensive to purchase, but save you money in the long run. A single incandescent light bulb can cost the same as 6 to 10 fluorescent bulbs – and the fluorescents last about 10 times longer. There are attractive compact units that illuminate more like a traditional bulb giving off a pleasing, soft light, as well as many other shapes and types to choose from.

  • Q:What are the benefits to a programmable thermostat?

A:Setting your thermostat a few degrees higher or lower when nobody is home will significantly lower your electricity use. According to ENERGY STAR, it could save up to $180 every year in energy costs.

  • Q:What are ceiling fans good for?

A:Fans circulate the air, creating a breeze and making the room feel cool. In the winter, fans help to keep warm, rising air circulating.

  • Q:Why should I buy energy-efficient appliances?

A:They use less electricity and less water than their traditional appliances.

  • Q:Why should I clean or replace my heating and cooling filters?

A:Dirty filters restrict the flow of air and will cause your heating and cooling systems to use more power. Clean filters will reduce electricity, and save you money on your electric bill.

  • Q:Is it important to unplug some of your electronic devices?

A:This is particularly important for those things that you don’t use a lot such as toaster ovens, speakers, and cellphone chargers. Any device that is plugged in is going to use a certain amount of energy, especially those items with LED indicators.

  • Q:Do you suggest turning off your water heater when going away?

A:If you plan to be out of town for an extended amount of time, turn off your water heater. The recommended water heater temperature is between 120 degree Fahrenheit and 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Lowering the temperature during the summer months will help you save on your electric bill.

  • Q:My children always forget to turn off the lights. What is a good tool to purchase to solve this issue?

A:Install occupancy sensor switches that provide automatic ON/OFF switching. These are especially useful if you have teenagers who always seem to forget to turn lights off.

  • Q:Why should I install shades, awnings or sunscreens?

A:In particular, covering windows facing south and west will help to block the summer sun. In winter, closed shades will help to keep the cold out, and open shades on sunny days will help to warm rooms.
